There are several different grades of scrap catalytic converters (detailed below) and only the most experienced of buyers know how to buy these.  It is not recommended to go around and try to buy catalytic converters from various sources such as muffler shops, repair shops, wrecking yards and scrap yards unless you know exactly what you're doing.

The precious metal of a catalytic converter is sprayed on the honeycomb catalyst in varying degrees depending upon the vehicle and its needs.  Recovering the precious metals are usually left to smelters around the world.
