2.5 million people live with HIV/AIDS in India. Tamil Nadu is one of the states where HIV prevalence rates are the highest. In 2006 a pilot project integrating nutrition in comprehensive care, support and treatment of HIV infected people was launched in Tamil Nadu to improve the health status of people under anti-retroviral treatment; a partnership among the World Food Program, the Global Alliance for improved nutrition, the Tamil Nadu Aids Control Society and the Government of Tamil Nadu. 26 Anti-Retroviral Therapy Centers distributed each month Nutriplus, a nutrition powder made from wheat and full-fat soya fortified with minerals and vitamins. 15 000 patients received NutriPlus. This pilot project helped recognize that food and nutrition are critical components of the global HIV and AIDS response. |
