NAFWA-Rich Site Summary Report
RSS For Your
Website
What is RSS?
Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication
(RSS) is a format that syndicates news feeds and other news-related content from
websites. It displays headlines from major news sources and updates on a regular
basis. It also allows for other websites interested in the content on your
website to have it put on their webpage. This is known as weblogging. Website
owners have found that RSS really drives traffic.
RSS Functions
- Updates top news headlines automatically and as soon
as they are available
- You can choose what you want to be displayed (specific
to your website)
- News can be emailed or received through a desktop
program
- Saves “old” news in an archive on your website
- Make your own blog for others to feed onto their
website
- Saves time and money. It is free.
Setting It Up
There are two ways to do it: through an RSS-aggregator
or through an online blog service. RSS-aggregators are programs that you install
on your computer, while a blog service is web-based. They both work the same,
but aggregators are generally much easier to use. RSS-aggregators will scour the
web and send a little pop-up or email when something new is found. You can then
decide if you want it to be updated on your website or not. If you do, all you
have to do is click a button and it will update your news box or section
immediately. This saves time, money, and setup is easy. Also, there are several
free programs that can be downloaded.
